Java

Java is one of the most popular and powerful backend languages, used widely by multi-billion-dollar enterprises around the globe. It’s been used and developed for over 25 years now, which makes it rich in open-source libraries, frameworks, and other community resources. Therefore, it is considered one of the most secure and reliable among backend programming languages, and works equally well in client-side and server-side applications.

Node.js

Younger than Java, Node.js is eagerly used both by startups and large enterprises. It is an excellent backend choice for building fast, scalable business applications. As with Java, a lively community makes Node.js resources dependable and up to date with the latest tech standards. One of the biggest advantages of using Node.js as a backend language is the impressive development speed, which can significantly reduce your app’s time-to-market. Node.js apps are also known for their high efficiency, enhanced performance and easy scalability.

Golang

Adored by startups as one of the hippest backend languages, Golang is a great choice for forward-thinking businesses pursuing innovation. Thanks to a number of built-in features, Golang reduces the need to use outside resources and provides outstanding application speed. Well suited for building microservice-based solutions, Golang is a great choice for applications that are expected to grow rapidly and need to be easily scalable. This language is also a great choice for projects that require efficient parallelism as it was specifically designed for multicore computers.

Kotlin

Constantly growing in popularity, Kotlin for backend is one of the relatively new programming languages that has managed to gain excellent community support in a short time. Kotlin offers full compatibility with Java and its ecosystem, which means it will work well if you have an existing Java tech stack. At the same time, Kotlin holds the advantage of being more concise and allowing developers to write much less code that they would in Java. All in all, Kotlin is known for powerful, scalable server-side applications.

Why do I need backend development services?

Backend for mobile app development

The frontend of your mobile app is what your users see and directly interact with on their devices. Backend applications, on the other hand, run on servers. They receive requests and prepare data which is transmitted back to users’ devices. Things such as user authentication, push notifications, content management and data storage are typically handled by the backend application. Depending on your app’s size and complexity, the backend of your app could be just a small service, or an advanced solution. Our team investigates your needs and the scope of your project, then advises you on the best backend solution in your case.

Backend for web app development

Like mobile applications, web applications need backend services for stable and secure performance. While frontend development refers to the client side of your application, website backend applications are responsible for the server side of your product, implementing business logic of your product. Choosing the right backend technology might be tricky, and that’s why we analyse your expectations and your app’s scope to recommend a backend solution suited to your needs.

How to choose the right backend technology for your app

Time to market

If you’re developing an app that needs to be delivered as quickly as possible, it’s smart to go for Node.js. This framework is known to be fast, efficient, and flexible, working smoothly even in data-packed apps that need to run across various devices. On the other hand, both Java and Kotlin offer a range of frameworks that facilitate code writing for developers, and, as a result, speed up the process.

Dependability

The type system implemented in Go and a built-in code analysis tool allow for eliminating entire classes of application bugs at the early stages of development. Therefore, if you’re searching for extra security and app dependability, Golang might be the right choice for you. Thanks to large community support, Java would also be a safe pick here.

App complexity

Looking to create an enterprise application with a complex architecture? Java will remain the safe choice here. Multi-threaded processing makes Java a great choice for large-scale apps that need to serve thousands of users, process a number of complex business operations at once and scale dynamically.

Scalability

Compared to other backend technologies, Golang is known for its exceptional ability to support concurrency. Thanks to that, it will be a good choice if you expect your business and your user numbers to grow rapidly and need an easily scalable solution. Node.js and Kotlin would also be good choices here.

Modernity

Both Kotlin and Golang fit the requirements of modern development standards. They are the most progressive of the group, created with principles of clarity and simplicity in mind. They offer a variety of mechanisms that facilitate code writing and testing.

Community support

If you’re searching for a verified solution, consider using Java for backend development. As one of the most popular programming languages in the world, Java offers strong community support and a large amount of open-source resources.

Understanding your idea and needs

First things first! We identify the scope of your project and take our time to understand your business needs. This includes discussing the potential features and the complexity of your app. Thanks to this, we can identify technical solutions required to support your idea, decide on the tech stack and estimate the development time. At the end of this phase, we can give you a general development quotation and schedule.

Preparing the ground for development

We want to make sure your idea turns into a huge success. To help you choose the best strategy and sharpen your vision, we’ve put together sessions of strategy, data or product workshops, all profiled to fit your needs.
We also take extra time to review the tech requirements and spot possible obstacles down the road. At the end of this phase, we’ve gathered development requirements, and prepared the basic documentation of the project.

Bringing your application idea into reality

Time to get to work! This is where we set up the backend architecture of your app. This is also where we complete the designs and implement the frontend side of your application. The length of this phase depends on the app size and complexity. It usually takes us 3 months to create a fully-functional MVP – that is, a minimum viable product ready to be released to the market.

Introducing your product to the market

Time to shine! As soon as your product is finished, we take care of the deployment and release. Timing is crucial here—we make sure that every individual part of the system is released on schedule and works perfectly, without any downtime. If it’s a mobile app, we take care of the app store listings as well. Once your application is live, we provide ongoing support.

Taking care of your product

At Miquido, we pride ourselves in building long-lasting partnerships with our clients. If you decide that your app needs extra features, changes or enhancements – great! We start working right away, all the while supporting the existing version. However, if you decide you want to transfer the project to your in-house team, we help you plan the process and make sure it goes smoothly.

Custom app development

Looking for an experienced backend development company to build your unique, custom app? We’ve got you covered. We build custom digital products from scratch, starting with deep market research, gathering data-based insights, and studying your needs and business goals carefully to offer you a solution that fits like a glove.

What is there to gain? Recognisable design to help you stand out and build a strong brand. Scalability and flexibility that lets you adjust your product as your business grows. No unnecessary features, but a product that is tailor-made for you. Development schedule and budget adjusted to your business plan. Full application support and maintenance. And that’s just to name a few advantages!

What is backend development?

Backend development, also known as server-side programming, refers to the behind-the-scenes part of your application. It’s responsible for the business logic of your app: it stores and organises your data, processes information and integrates with external services. Frontend, on the other hand, is sometimes called a client-side, because it is the part of the app that your clients can see and interact with.

How do I choose the right backend technology for my app?

Each backend language has its own benefits and limitations, and there is no universal recipe that would be perfect for every possible project. As always, it depends on your business needs and expectations. However, choosing the right backend tech stack is one of the most important decisions during your project’s course. It directly affects the way your app is going to work: its performance, security or stability, and can therefore influence your success.

However, the right software development company should carefully study the realities of your project and advise you on the right backend technology. To make the decision-making process easier, try asking yourself these questions first:

  • What are my app benchmarks?
  • What is the planned scope of my app?
  • How many users is it going to serve?
  • How much time do I have to develop it?
  • What is my budget?

Which backend technology is the fastest?

This question is tricky and not easy to answer, as it mostly depends on the specifics of a given project. However, we are proud to say that each of the backend technologies we offer at Miquido, combined with a modern cloud-based infrastructure, lets us create backend applications that are impressively fast.

Which cloud platform to choose: AWS or Azure?

There is no universal answer here, as there are a lot of factors to consider – such as your budget and the features you are planning to implement. Both solutions are cost-effective, easily scalable and super-secure.

AWS, offered by Amazon, is the most mature player in the cloud services field. The solution has been around since 2006, so it shouldn’t surprise that its main advantage over competitors is their various range of services, with over 175 to choose from. One of the stronger assets is also the security of their cloud, as AWS claims that they have the largest system of security partners and solutions. Compared to competition, AWS may also sound like the safest and most battle-tested pick, as their cloud services are used by millions around the world and are accessible from 190 countries. AWS is still considered to be the leading cloud services provider on the market.

Microsoft Azure is younger than the AWS services, but it evolves and grows constantly. The company itself claims that their main advantage over AWS are the pricing benefits, even suggesting that Azure is 5 times more cost-effective than AWS. Like Amazon, Microsoft places a strong focus on security and keeps investing in expanding their multi-layered security system. One of the strongest advantages of Azure is that their cloud services are integrated with other Microsoft products, which make them a good choice if your company is already using their other resources. However, Azure is believed to be more complex and difficult to use, compared to AWS.

What is backend API?

API stands for Application Programming Interface, and, generally speaking, it is a software that allows applications to “communicate” with each other. Let’s take a web application as our example. What you see and interact with is the frontend of the web application. On the other hand, data management, processing, and generally, business logic of the application happens on the backend side. Whenever you perform an action on the website (that is, interact with the frontend side), like filling out a form or placing an order, it is the API that actually “communicates” your action to the backend. Once the backend is done processing your “order”, the API brings the result back to you.

A backend API is an interface used by a mobile or web application to communicate with the backend. For example, imagine that you are planning to develop a web application, and then maybe expand your business in the future by developing the same app for Android and iOS. Each one of these apps would require communication with the backend through the API. Moreover, you would be able to re-use the same business logic between various platforms and devices. This will allow you to save time and money, as your future solutions are all built on the same, shared backend architecture.10
